Indonesia’s Immigration Office has introduced special measures for foreign nationals stranded by international flight disruptions following the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
Foreign nationals whose flights were canceled or diverted are eligible for a Stay Permit for Compelling Circumstances.
In addition, Immigration has waived overstay fees, applying a zero‑tariff policy for those unable to depart due to delays or cancellations caused by the disaster.
Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko said the policy reflects the government’s commitment to provide legal certainty for foreigners affected by natural emergencies.
“For example, if someone has already booked and confirmed their ticket, meaning they are ready to depart, and then this situation occurs, we must respond accordingly,” Hendarsam explained at Soekarno‑Hatta International Airport on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Emergency Stay Permits in Action
By Monday afternoon, the Soekarno‑Hatta Class I Special Immigration Office had processed 26 applications for the emergency stay permit.
Applicants came from countries including China, Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Hendarsam noted that this proactive approach demonstrates Immigration Office’s readiness to provide legal certainty while maintaining a humane response during a natural disaster.
“We ensure that processing these permits is fast, efficient, and free of overstay charges, so foreign nationals can feel secure while in Indonesia until flights return to normal,” he said.
How to Apply
Foreign nationals seeking this facility can apply directly at any immigration office across Indonesia. Applicants need only present proof of flight cancellation from the airline and show their boarding pass.
Hendarsam emphasized that this discretionary measure is not limited to the Anak Krakatau eruption but can be applied in any emergency or force majeure situation.
“This permit is valid for 30 days and can be extended under prevailing regulations if conditions remain uncertain. Of course, we hope the situation improves quickly,” he concluded.
