Jakarta Globe is reporting that State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir and Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi have officially inaugurated Angkasa Pura Indonesia, known as InJourney Airports, following the merger of state airport operators Angkasa Pura I and Angkasa Pura II. This merger is expected to enhance the global competitiveness of Indonesian airports.
“Angkasa Pura I and II will become Angkasa Pura Indonesia. We manage 37 airports that will now operate as a single service system,” Erick Thohir told reporters at the InJourney headquarters in Central Jakarta on Monday (9/9/24.)
The merger process, which took about nine months, involved completing 69 applicable regulations. InJourney Airports is anticipated to bring several benefits, including reduced logistics costs and streamlined air transportation services, say Jakarta Globe.
Thohir hopes that InJourney Airports will create a new ecosystem at airports, transforming them from mere transport hubs into vibrant centers of activity. “This is why we will be improving the business model,” Thohir said.
Dony Oskaria, President Director of InJourney, added that the merger makes Indonesia one of the largest airport operators globally. “We are now the fifth largest airport operator in the world,” he said.
Before the merger, Angkasa Pura I managed key airports, including Ngurah Rai International Airport (Bali), Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (Makassar), and Juanda International Airport (Surabaya). In 2023, Angkasa Pura I handled 69.83 million passengers across 15 airports, a 34 percent increase from the 52.29 million passengers recorded in 2022, according to Jakarta Globe.
Angkasa Pura II manages Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Jakarta), Kualanamu International Airport (Medan), and Sultan Thaha Airport (Jambi). In 2023, the cumulative passenger movements at 20 airports under AP II reached 80.14 million, a 30 percent increase from the 61.99 million passenger movements in 2022.
