Jokowi: Indonesia and Friends Must Be Part of the Global Health Supply Chain

CNN Indonesia, reporting from the G20 Summit in Bali, say that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) wants Indonesia and other developing countries to be part of the global health supply chain. According to Jokowi, developing countries need to take part in order to erase the health disparity with developed countries, where the gap in health, especially in infrastructure, is very wide.

“The health capacity gap cannot be allowed. Developing countries need empowering partnerships. Developing countries must become part of the global health supply chain,” he said in his opening speech at session 2 of the G20 Summit, Bali, Tuesday (15/11).

Jokowi wants developing countries to be part of world health manufacturing and research. Of course, this desire can be achieved with assistance from other G20 member countries, say CNN Indonesia.

“This can only happen if investment in the health industry is increased, research cooperation and technology transfer are strengthened and access to production raw materials is expanded for developing countries,” he explained.

In addition, the Trade-Related Aspect on Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Waivers or agreements on access to health must be expanded to produce concrete solutions, including diagnostics and therapeutics.

Jokowi also hopes that the WHO can be stronger in overseeing health issues that are evenly distributed throughout the world. “WHO must also realize its commitment regarding hubs and spokes for health solutions,” he added.

Currently, Indonesia already has a pandemic fund or a pandemic fund that was launched in the series of implementation of the G20 Summit. The pandemic fund aims to make the world better prepared for future pandemics, say CNN Indonesia.

Jokowi hopes that G20 members will contribute funding for this pandemic fund to follow Indonesia’s steps. Thus, the funds collected can later be used to address world health problems, especially to countries in need.

“This must be followed by additional funding contributions so that it functions optimally. I invite all parties to contribute, Indonesia has committed USD 50-million,” he concluded.
