JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is proceeding with a major coastal protection initiative on Java’s north coast (Pantura), a region that is both economically crucial and increasingly vulnerable to environmental dangers.
Officials are currently evaluating 15 segments for the construction of a “giant sea wall” stretching from Serang in Banten province to Gresik in East Java.
The project is being directed by the Pantura Java Management Authority, headed by Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, who also serves as Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
The announcement follows a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Segments to Be Tailored to Local Conditions
Didit explained that the 15 segments are still under deep review, with no final decisions made on specific locations.
“The points have not yet been decided because they require further assessment,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
Areas under consideration include Jakarta Bay as well as several locations in Central and West Java.
The total planned length of the giant sea wall is approximately 575 kilometers.
Unlike a single uniform structure, the wall will be constructed thematically, with design and construction adapted to the unique economic and geographical conditions of each segment.
Local economic activities will be integrated into mitigation plans.
Timeline and Collaboration Still Being Finalized
Authorities are now formulating a timeline that involves all the necessary components for such a large-scale infrastructure project.
Greater collaboration between central and regional governments, along with local communities, will be crucial to determine sub-segments and sections within the 15 main segments.
“The points have not yet been decided because they require further assessment,” stated by Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, Head of the Pantura Java Management Authority.
The region is home to key industrial zones, ports, and farmland, but much of it is sinking due to excessive groundwater pumping and climate-fueled sea level rise.
