Travel Pick: Top 8 Must-Visit Asian Destinations in 2025

Asia, the world’s largest continent, is a treasure trove of diverse travel experiences. While destinations like Bali, Tokyo, and Bangkok are already household names, there are emerging gems across the continent that promise unique adventures. Here’s a curated list from timeout.com of eight must-visit spots for 2025.

1. Sumba, Indonesia

Sumba is a hidden paradise combining untouched natural beauty and rich cultural traditions. This Indonesia island boasts idyllic beaches like Nihiwatu, once crowned the world’s best beach, and stunning landscapes of rolling savannahs. Visitors can explore the crystal-clear waters of Weekuri Lagoon or learn about ancient customs by visiting the megalithic tombs of Anakalang.

The island’s eco-tourism is thriving, offering travelers a chance to immerse themselves in sustainable experiences. Cultural enthusiasts can witness Pasola, a vibrant spear-throwing festival held in February and March. With the upgraded Tambolaka Airport welcoming direct international flights in 2025, Sumba is becoming more accessible while maintaining its tranquil charm.

Best time to visit: Dry season (May–October) for sunny days and cultural festivals.

2. Siargao, Philippines

Famous among surfers, Siargao is now capturing the world’s attention with its laid-back vibe and raw natural beauty. The teardrop-shaped island offers thrilling surf spots and scenic northern beaches, along with hidden gems like waterfalls and rock pools. For those seeking adventure, renting a scooter to explore the island is a must.

September is the best time to visit, coinciding with the annual Siargao International Surfing Cup, where world-class surfers compete. Beyond surfing, visitors can relax and enjoy Siargao’s unspoiled charm, as mobile service may be limited, allowing you to truly disconnect.

3. Da Nang, Vietnam

Located between Sơn Trà Mountain and the South China Sea, Da Nang is a coastal gem evolving into a vibrant urban hub. Known for its stunning beaches and laid-back charm, the city is gaining attention for its burgeoning food and bar scene.

For adventurers, a motorbike ride through the Hai Van Pass leads to Hoi An, a UNESCO-listed ancient town famous for its colorful lanterns and preserved architecture. Da Nang’s mix of modern attractions and cultural heritage makes it a must-visit destination in 2025.

4. Tainan, Taiwan

Tainan, Taiwan’s oldest city and its original capital, is a haven for history, culture, and food lovers. Often referred to as Taiwan’s foodie capital, Tainan offers culinary delights like douhua (tofu pudding) and other local favorites.

In 2025, Tainan celebrates its 400th anniversary with events like the Agricultural and Fishing Art Festival, running until April 30, and the Tainan International Dragon Boat Championships on May 30–31. Visitors can also explore iconic landmarks like the Anping Tree House and enjoy the city’s vibrant arts and cultural scene.

5. Ipoh, Malaysia

Ipoh, the charming capital of Perak, is quickly becoming one of Malaysia’s top destinations. Travelers can now easily reach the city thanks to new flights from Singapore and a two-hour express train from Kuala Lumpur.

The city is known for its colonial architecture, quaint shophouses, and cave temples nestled within limestone cliffs. Don’t miss Jeff’s Cellar, a one-of-a-kind dining experience set inside a 260-million-year-old limestone cave. Ipoh also boasts a thriving food scene, offering culinary delights that reflect its rich cultural heritage.

6. Osaka, Japan

Osaka, often overshadowed by Tokyo, is stepping into the spotlight in 2025 as it hosts the World Expo from April to October. Known for its vibrant culinary scene, the city lives by the motto “eat ‘til you’re broke,” with street food staples like takoyaki and okonomiyaki alongside a growing fine dining scene.

The city also offers abundant shopping, lively nightlife, and family-friendly attractions like theme parks. If you crave nature, the outskirts of Osaka feature beautiful parks and forests perfect for a quick escape. Visitors can also explore Asia’s first Time Out Market, opening in March 2025.

7. Nan, Thailand

Nan, a lesser-known city in northern Thailand, is a dream for adventurous travelers. Its remote location is part of its charm, offering stunning mountain views and a deep connection to ancient traditions. Explore old teak manor houses and the famous mural “Whisper of Love” at Wat Phumin.

Sightseeing is easy with a free electric bus looping through the city, while the vibrant night market offers delicious street food and local souvenirs. October is the ideal time to visit, as the Boat Race Festival brings lively celebrations and riverside excitement.

8. Lijiang, China

Lijiang, located in Yunnan Province, is a UNESCO-listed Old Town renowned for its Naxi-style architecture and cultural heritage. The city is a gateway to breathtaking attractions like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, and Tiger Leaping Gorge, offering hikes with spectacular views.

Visitors can also explore nearby destinations like Lugu Lake and Shangri-La or enjoy quieter spots like Baima Snow Mountain, home to rare black snub-nosed monkeys. Lijiang’s vibrant festivals, such as the Lantern Festival, showcase the traditions of the Naxi people, making it a cultural hotspot.
