According to reporting from Jakarta Globe, Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that foreign tourist visits from January to December 2023 reached 11.68-million, an increase of 98.3-percent compared to the same period in 2022.
However, this achievement still falls below the level of visits in 2019 (pre-Covid-19 pandemic), which reached 16.11-million visits.
The number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in December 2023 reached 1.14-million, marking a 22.91-percent increase compared to the previous month.
This increase reversed the declining trend in foreign tourist numbers observed since September 2023. When comparing December 2023 to the same month in the previous year, foreign tourist visits continued to show an increase of 20.17-percent, say Jakarta Globe.
“Despite this positive trend, the current figures are still below the pre-Covid-19 conditions. In December 2019, foreign tourist visits reached 1.38-million,” said Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, in a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (1/2/24.)
Jakarta Globe says that the majority of international visitors in December 2023 were from Malaysia (18.45-percent), Singapore (16.41-percent), and Australia (11.87-percent). Ngurah Rai and Soekarno Hatta airports registered increases of 143.64-percent and 108.95-percent, respectively in 2023.
Meanwhile, the total number of domestic tourist trips in 2023 reached 7.52-million, showing an increase of 112.26-percent compared to the previous year’s 3.54-million trips. Malaysia emerged as the top destination for domestic tourists in 2023, accounting for 27.98-percent of the total domestic tourist visits.
Hotel occupancy rates for starred hotels in December 2023 reached 59.74-percent, reflecting a 2.84-point increase year-on-year and a 3.02-point increase month-to-month, according to Jakarta Globe, adding that non-starred hotel occupancy rates in December 2023 reached 28.67-percent, marking a 2.22-point increase year-on-year and a 3.01-point increase from the previous month. However, the average length of stay in starred hotels decreased by 0.05-points compared to the previous year, reaching 1.57-days.
