Jakarta’s acting Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, has asked his staff to transform Jakarta into a global business city after it sheds its national capital status, according to reporting from Antara News.
“We have to prepare all this – the right structure and thinking – for Jakarta to continue to progress as a global (business) city and keep existing, to be a great investment destination. That’s the inner situation in Jakarta,” he said here on Wednesday.
He made the statement during a discussion entitled “Jakarta’s Transition into a Global Business City” at Jakarta International Equestrian Park (JIEP), East Jakarta, say Antara News.
At the forum, he gathered all his staff, high-ranking officials, and leaders of region-owned enterprises (BUMDs).
“Today, I hold this gathering (to talk about) Jakarta’s position in this national capital issue. This is not easy, we have to position ourselves as this change is underway,” he said.
Antara News report the Jakarta provincial government and the Home Ministry are working on a special bill on the status of Jakarta city in response to the transfer of the national capital to East Kalimantan. Hartono said he wants Jakarta to continue to be known as an investment destination after it is no longer the national capital.
There is a lot to prepare in facing the future status of Jakarta, he added and cooperation with regional governments near Jakarta will also be needed, say Antara news.
“There are Bekasi, Bogor, and Depok, (to make decisions on) health, transportation, and stunting problems,” he noted.
Earlier, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said it expects the capital city relocation to affect Jakarta’s economic performance.
The reason is that labour-intensive industries are expected to leave the city and other satellite cities on account of the shifting of the capital.
