Antara News is reporting that the government of East Java’s Banyuwangi district has announced this year’s edition of international cycling race Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (TdBI) will feature cyclists from 24 countries.
“We consistently hold the international cycling race Tour de Ijen, which, this year, marks its 10th edition. The event is part of Banyuwangi’s efforts to advance cycling sports in Indonesia,” Banyuwangi district head Ipuk Fiestiandani said on Tuesday (22/7/25.)
Antara News says that the event, which is included in the calendar of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), will take place from July 28 to 31, 2025.
During the race, which will have four étapes or stages, cyclists will cover 593 kilometers through Banyuwangi’s scenic natural landscapes.
According to Fiestiandani, sports tourism will continue to be promoted to attract visitors and position Banyuwangi as one of the best cycling destinations in Indonesia, says Antara News.
Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen is not just a sports event: it has helped put Banyuwangi on the global map, she added.
She noted that since the race was first held in 2012, interest among participants has continued to grow, with teams from several countries expressing their wish to complete what is touted to be one of the toughest uphill climbs in the world.
According to the organizing committee, 44 teams from different countries expressed an interest in joining this year’s TdBI, but only 20 teams were selected based on their UCI rankings.
“We chose 20 teams based on the rankings of both teams and riders in the UCI,” Fiestiandani explained.
Acting head of Banyuwangi’s Youth and Sports Office, M. Alfin Kurniawan, said that 14 out of the 20 participating teams are from overseas.
Antara News reports that several countries are participating in TdBI for the first time this year, including Estonia, Italy, and the Arab nations. One of the popular teams is Swatt Club from Italy, a well-known European team recognized for its young riders.
Meanwhile, six Indonesian teams will participate in the race: Jakarta Pro Cycling, Nusantara-BYC, ASC Monsters Indonesia, Banyuwangi Road Cycling Club (BRCC), Anonymous Cycling Team, and Pontianak Wuaya Racing.
