BRICS 2025: Indonesia Calls for Climate Action and Global Reform

President Prabowo Subianto and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto represented Indonesia at the 2025 BRICS Summit held at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” gathered leaders to discuss the future direction of emerging economies.

Minister Airlangga shared Indonesia’s support for four key outcomes outlined in the BRICS Leaders’ Declaration:

1.Strengthening Multilateralism and Global Governance Reform
BRICS leaders agreed to promote a rules-based international order, reform global governance institutions, and enhance peace, security, and stability worldwide.

“The declaration reaffirmed BRICS’ commitment to strengthening multilateralism and reforming global governance,” Airlangga said on July 7, as quoted by DW.

2.Deepening Economic, Trade, and Financial Cooperation
BRICS nations committed to boosting trade and financial collaboration. This is seen as a strategic advantage for Indonesia, especially amid current global economic uncertainty.

“This cooperation is key for Indonesia, offering greater access to global markets for our products,” Airlangga added.

3.Addressing Climate Change and Promoting Sustainable Development
Leaders underscored their commitment to tackling climate change through fair and inclusive development. The emphasis was placed on clean energy transitions and long-term sustainability.

4.Enhancing Human, Social, and Cultural Development Partnerships
The declaration also promotes stronger collaboration in areas such as education, health, and cultural exchange to drive inclusive progress among member states.

President Prabowo used the platform to underscore the urgency of revitalizing multilateralism amid an increasingly multipolar world. He also stressed the importance of equitable leadership among Global South countries and encouraged enhanced use of the New Development Bank (NDB) to finance clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and development projects. The NDB is currently funding 120 projects worth approximately USD 39 billion.

“Indonesia is committed to actively participating in the New Development Bank to support green transformation and sustainable growth,” Airlangga added.

Climate and Health: Indonesia’s Commitment on Global Stage

On day two of the summit, President Prabowo joined sessions focused on the environment, COP30, and global health. Vice Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, explained that Indonesia is facing direct impacts from climate change and is accelerating its clean energy transition.

“President Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s commitment to fighting climate change and advancing clean energy efforts,” Nasir told the media, as quoted by Berita Satu.

He added that several countries expressed readiness to collaborate ahead of the COP30 conference in Belem, Brazil.

In addition to environmental issues, President Prabowo addressed global health. He reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for the World Health Organization (WHO) in tackling transnational health challenges.

Indonesia’s growing influence within BRICS was also highlighted. With its expanded membership, BRICS now accounts for 40% of global GDP and 56% of the world’s population. Based on purchasing power parity, the bloc has even surpassed the G7 in economic size.

President Prabowo also rejected war and double standards in international policy, advocating for greater representation of Global South nations in institutions like the United Nations. He called for the Bandung Spirit to be carried forward in the BRICS platform to promote fairness and solidarity.
