Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto met with Swiss Federal Councilor and Minister of Economic Affairs, Guy Parmelin in Paris. The two leaders discussed how Indonesia and Switzerland collaborate to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Switzerland across various strategic sectors. The meeting took place in June 2025.
Growing Trade and Investment in Indonesia Switzerland Relations
In 2024, the total trade volume between Indonesia and Switzerland reached USD 2.33 billion. Indonesia exported goods worth USD 1.5 billion, while imports from Switzerland totaled to around USD 800 million. Swiss investment in Indonesia also saw a significant rise, increasing by over 63% to USD 244.9 million. Today, around 150 Swiss companies operate in Indonesia, while 11 Indonesian businesses have established a presence in Switzerland.
Collaboration in Key Areas to Strengthen Indonesia Switzerland Partnership
Minister Airlangga extended an invitation to Switzerland to deepen cooperation in several forward-looking sectors. These include green and low-carbon industries, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and the digital economy.
“Indonesia invites Switzerland to collaborate in various strategic areas, such as low-carbon and technology-based industries, healthcare, and the digital economy,” Airlangga stated during the meeting.
He also emphasized the role of vocational education and professional training in the Indonesian-EFTA Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), highlighting its importance for workforce development in both countries.
Support for OECD Accession
Indonesia is currently working to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Minister Airlangga said that Indonesia had submitted its Initial Memorandum, a major step in the process. He thanked Switzerland for its support and asked for continued cooperation, especially in sharing experiences and technical expertise.
A History of Strong Relations in Indonesia Switzerland Cooperation
Indonesia and Switzerland have had diplomatic ties since 1951. Over the years, their partnership has grown stronger. They now work together in areas such as trade, education, investment, and humanitarian aid. Switzerland also lists Indonesia as one of its priority countries for development cooperation
This meeting reflected the shared commitment of both countries to grow together. With continued collaboration, Indonesia and Switzerland are ready to strengthen their bond and create new opportunities in the years ahead.
