According to reporting from Antara News, President Prabowo Subianto is planning to partner with environmental activist group Pandawara to carry out a large-scale activity to address the issue of waste management in Indonesia.
“So, there will be a mass action to overcome the issue of waste, from upstream to downstream,” Gilang Rahma, a Pandawara member, told the press after a meeting with President Prabowo on Tuesday (11/3/25.)
Pandawara will go all out in carrying out the massive movement to address waste, he emphasized.
During the meeting, he said, President Prabowo lauded the social movement carried out by the group of five young men from Bandung to deal with the problem of waste in the country, says Antara News.
Pandawara considers the appreciation as additional motivation to continue to serve the public, he added.
President Prabowo also advised the group to remain committed and enthusiastic in carrying out their mission.
“A special request from the President for us to keep going and remain committed. That is number one priority,” Rahma said.
In related news, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo has emphasized the Indonesian government’s firm commitment to rapidly transforming waste management in Indonesia to produce clean and sustainable energy, says Antara News.
“Smart and modern waste management is highly possible. Surabaya’s success in processing waste into electricity is proof that waste has high economic potential,” he said on Monday (10/3/25.)
In the minister’s view, Indonesia’s biggest challenge is the relentless daily increase in waste volume.
To tackle this, the Ministry of Public Works is actively encouraging the acceleration of the construction of waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities in various regions and optimizing the implementation of the 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recovery) principle.
According to Antara News, Hanggodo explained that the government is simplifying regulations and adjusting electricity rates from Waste Power Plants (PLTSa) to attract more private investment.
In addition, waste management projects are expected to run effectively through the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme, thereby minimizing the financial burden on the state budget.
The minister expressed hope that the success of the waste management model at the Benowo final waste processing site in Surabaya could serve as an inspiration and be replicated by other cities across Indonesia, reports Antara News.
“Modern waste management is the main key to creating smart, healthy, and comfortable cities in Indonesia. This is not only a dream but a reality that we can realize together,” he said.
President Prabowo Subianto expressed optimism that Indonesia would achieve energy self-sufficiency during his presidency and no longer depend on other nations.
Prabowo emphasized that achieving energy self-sufficiency is crucial for Indonesia as a sovereign country amid global tensions and potential conflicts that could arise anywhere and anytime.
