Hotel Businesses in Indonesia Surge 7.48 Percent in 2024

According to Indonesia Statistics Agency in its publication, Hotel and Other Accommodation Statistics in Indonesia 2024, the number of hotels and accommodation businesses in Indonesia grew by 7.48% in 2024.

The total number of accommodation businesses in 2024 reached 31,175, an increase of 2,170 businesses compared to 2023, which recorded 29,005 businesses.

This figure includes 4,584 star-rated hotels and 26,591 other types of accommodations. The growth patterns for star-rated hotels and other accommodations showed similar trends.

Specifically, the number of star-rated hotels grew from 4,129 businesses in 2023. Other accommodations also saw growth, although their total number remains below the 27,179 businesses recorded in 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across provinces, most regions experienced growth in accommodation businesses in 2024. Bali led with 4,154 businesses, followed by East Java with 4,055, and West Java with 3,125.

Non-Star Hotels Dominate

In 2024, non-star hotels, locally known as hotel melati, were the most common accommodation type in Indonesia. These budget-friendly hotels offer basic amenities at affordable rates.

Out of the total 31,175 accommodation businesses, 13,376 were non-star hotels, making them the most prevalent category compared to star-rated hotels and other accommodations such as youth hostels, guesthouses, villas, and cottages.

West Java recorded the highest number of non-star hotels, with 1,326 hotels, followed by Central Java with 1,268 hotels.

Three-Star Hotels Lead the Market

The report highlighted that among the 4,584 star-rated hotels in 2024, three-star hotels were the most common, comprising 1,755 hotels or 38.24% of the total. This was followed by:

  • Two-star hotels: 1,079
  • Four-star hotels: 940
  • One-star hotels: 514
  • Five-star hotels: 296

West Java led the count with 620 star-rated hotels, followed by Bali with 550, and Jakarta with 496. On the other hand, provinces with the fewest star-rated hotels included West Sulawesi, South Papua, and Highland Papua, each with only seven hotels.

Room Capacity in Star-Rated Hotels

Star-rated hotels in Indonesia offered a total of 461,766 rooms in 2024. Jakarta had the highest number of rooms at 73,255, followed by West Java with 67,250, and Bali with 60,048. Meanwhile, Highland Papua had the fewest rooms, with only 238 available.

Highest Bookings in December 2024

With the growing number of accommodation businesses in Indonesia, it’s no surprise that booking rates have also surged, especially during December 2024.

According to the latest data from SiteMinder, a leading global hotel distribution and revenue platform, Indonesia led global growth in international hotel bookings during December 2024. The country recorded a 26% increase in bookings, driven by the school holiday season, Christmas, and New Year celebrations.

Foreign tourists accounted for an estimated 65% of total hotel bookings in December 2024, up from 51% in December 2023. This significant rise contributed to a 4% year-on-year increase in overall hotel bookings during the year-end holiday period, from December 21 to December 31.

Key Trends in Holiday Bookings

This surge in bookings aligned with longer stays and earlier reservations, reflecting increased confidence in international travel and a return to planning trips well in advance.

  • Average stay duration: Increased by 7% year-on-year, from 2.25 days to 2.42 days.
  • Booking lead time: Grew by 16% year-on-year, from 79 days to 91 days.

Rio Ricaro, SiteMinder’s Country Manager for Indonesia, highlighted that Indonesia’s year-end holiday season remains a major draw for both international and domestic tourists.

SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report 2025 revealed that 65% of travelers worldwide are now more likely to travel for specific events, family reunions and celebrations topping the list of reasons for travel.
