Tour de Siak 2024: Indonesia’s Premier Cycling Race Returns This December

The Tour de Siak, one of Indonesia’s most anticipated cycling events, is set to return this December 2024.

Cyclists from around the globe will race across the stunning landscapes of Siak, Riau Province, drawing global attention to the region.

This year’s event promises not only thrilling competition but also significant economic benefits for local businesses and the tourism industry.

Acting Regent of Siak, Indra Purnama, has expressed his support for the cycling event.

“Tour de Siak is a prestigious event that has the power to attract international tourists. I hope that all parties can work together to make this event a success,” said Indra in a press statement on Wednesday (11/13/2024), as reported by IDN Times.

Tour de Siak: A Look Back

Launched in 2013, the Tour de Siak has steadily evolved to become one of Southeast Asia’s premier cycling events, gaining international recognition over the years.

In 2018, it became part of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Asia Tour, an esteemed professional cycling circuit that organizes annual races across Asia.

Since joining the UCI Asia Tour, the Tour de Siak has attracted a growing number of participants, drawing both local cyclists and international competitors.

Set against the backdrop of Siak’s historic landmarks and lush landscapes, this challenging race offers a truly unique experience.

The carefully designed routes showcase the region’s natural beauty, adding a scenic element to the competitive spirit of the event.

With each passing year, the Tour de Siak continues to captivate cycling enthusiasts and promote Siak as a must-visit destination in Indonesia.

Tour de Siak 2024: Dates, Route, and What’s New

“The Tour de Siak 2024 will take place from December 4 to 8, featuring new routes that differ from those in previous races.

The Head of the Siak Tourism Office, Tekad Perbatas Setia Dewa, explained, ‘If last year the race started from Siak City with participants heading toward the districts, this year the race will start in the district capitals and head toward Siak,’ as reported by TribunSiak.com.

This adjustment aims to involve more people outside Siak City in the event, while also giving cyclists a chance to experience local tourism destinations across the Siak District.

The race will consist of three stages, or “etape.” The first stage will cover the Apit-Siak River route, the second will continue onto Tualang-Siak, and the final stage will reach Mempura Siak.

“In the first stage, participants will cover a distance of 90 kilometers. In the second stage, they will cover 140 kilometers. The third stage, a city race, covers a distance of 135 kilometers,” Tekad added.

Organizers promise an even more challenging route this year, increasing excitement for both cyclists and spectators.

The event is expected to attract thousands of spectators, providing a significant boost to local tourism.”

Public and Local Reactions

While the Tour de Siak has been praised for promoting Siak as a tourist destination, it has not been without controversy.

Ngatino, a resident of Kampung Jati Baru, expressed his concerns about the event’s impact on the local community.

According to him, the cycling event has little positive impact on Siak residents.

“The general public already knows what the Tour de Siak is like, but our voices are not heard. Such events only benefit a few lucky people, the elites, while the public just watches,” he said, as reported by TribunSiak.com.

Other residents have raised concerns about disruptions caused by street closures and increased traffic during the race.

Some also worry about the safety implications of large crowds and cyclists sharing the roads.

In response, local officials argue that the event brings essential tourism revenue and international attention to Siak.

Tekad Perbatas Setia Dewa, Head of the Siak Tourism Office, emphasized that the event aims to support local small businesses by increasing their exposure and, ultimately, boosting the local economy.”

Looking Beyond the Race

The Tour de Siak 2024 promises to boost Siak’s tourism and local economy by attracting global attention and supporting local businesses.

While some residents express concerns, officials are optimistic about the event’s benefits.

Ultimately, the Tour de Siak is more than just a race; it is a celebration of Siak’s unique landscapes, people, and potential.
