Holiday travel in Indonesia just got cheaper. As Christmas and New Year 2025–2026 approach, the government is rolling out big discounts on flights, trains, and ferries—plus slashed airport and port service fees.
The Ministry of Transportation has officially cut economy-class domestic airfares by 13–14% for the peak travel period between December 22, 2025, and January 10, 2026. Tickets are available from October 22, 2025, under a stimulus program supported by the government’s VAT Borne by the State (DTP) scheme, reduced fuel surcharges, and lower jet fuel prices.
“This step ensures interregional connectivity remains smooth and affordable for the public,” said Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi on October 21, 2025, as quoted by KaltengDaily.
He noted that the initiative follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to strengthen household consumption and sustain economic growth in late 2025.
The policy, outlined in Ministerial Decree No. KM 50/2025, results from cooperation among ministries, airlines, and airport operators. It includes a 6% state-covered VAT, a 2% jet fuel surcharge cut, a 20% reduction for propeller aircraft, and 50% off passenger and aircraft service charges at 37 airports. The adjustment could save passengers up to USD 22 per ticket.
Discounts for Airfare, Trains, Ferries, and Ships
In addition to the airfare cuts, PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (InJourney Airports) is granting a 50% discount on passenger service fees (PJP2U) for scheduled and extra domestic flights during the same period.
“This reduction directly lowers airfare since the service fee is part of the ticket price,” explained InJourney Airports President Director Mohammad R. Pahlevi, as reported by Kompas.
He added that airlines will also benefit from a 50% discount on aircraft service fees, helping maintain operations while easing the public’s travel expenses.
The savings extend well beyond air travel.
- PT KAI (Indonesian Railways) will cut train fares by 30% for 1.5 million passengers.
- Pelni, the state shipping company, will reduce base fares by 20% for 405,000 sea travelers.
- ASDP Indonesia Ferry will lower port service fees for over 227,000 passengers and 491,000 vehicles during the same holiday period.
Tourism Sector to Launch Extra Holiday Promotions
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism has urged tourism businesses to participate by launching special year-end promotions to complement the government’s nationwide travel discounts. Deputy Minister for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, Ni Made Ayu Marthini said the transport discounts would attract more people to explore domestic destinations while improving their holiday experience.
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana added that additional incentives—including discounts on tolls, land, and air transport—will be announced later this month.
“We want to create a festive yet affordable year-end holiday atmosphere,” she said.
This broad incentive program is expected to drive household spending and stimulate the travel and hospitality sectors, helping sustain Indonesia’s economic growth momentum in the second half of 2025.
