Peak of Eid Homecoming Expected on March 28, 2025

Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, has projected that the peak of the 2025 Eid homecoming (mudik) traffic will occur starting March 28. The ministry is actively preparing all necessary measures to ensure smooth, safe, and comfortable journeys for travelers.

“Based on survey results, the peak of the homecoming traffic is predicted to take place on H-3, or March 28, 2025, with an estimated movement of 12.1 million people, facilitated by the implementation of the Work from Anywhere policy,” stated the Minister of Transportation during the Coordination Meeting on Eid Transportation 2025, which involved multiple ministries, agencies, associations, and transportation companies in Jakarta on Friday (March 21, 2025).

Meanwhile, the peak of the return traffic is expected to occur on H+5, or April 6, 2025, with an estimated movement of 31.49 million people.

The Ministry of Transportation, through the Transportation Policy Agency, has conducted a survey to assess the potential movement of people during the 2025 Eid holiday period.

In collaboration with Kompas Research and Development, the survey results indicate that the total estimated movement of people during this year’s Eid holiday will reach 146.48 million, equivalent to 52% of Indonesia’s total population.

Dudy confirmed that the survey findings have been reported to President Prabowo Subianto and communicated to relevant stakeholders, including the House of Representatives (DPR), ministries, government agencies, regional governments, the National Police, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), and private sector entities.

“To anticipate these figures, we have held coordination meetings with various parties, including ministers, regional leaders, and state-owned and private sector executives. This early preparation aims to ensure that people can travel safely, comfortably, and smoothly during the Eid homecoming and return periods,” Dudy explained.

The government will implement effective policies to mitigate the surge in travelers, which could lead to congestion at key transportation hubs and roadways, including highways and arterial roads.

“Some of the measures include implementing the Work from Anywhere (WFA) policy, providing free homecoming programs, implementing traffic engineering strategies, and regulating traffic flow, particularly in areas prone to severe congestion,” Dudy concluded.

First Wave of Homecoming Expected to Begin Today for East Java Routes

Meanwhile, the first wave of homecoming traffic for East Java and its surrounding areas is expected to begin today, Friday (March 21, 2025).

This initial wave is likely to be utilized by civil servants benefiting from the Work from Anywhere (WFA) policy and families with school-age children who are starting their holiday break.

“The homecoming period or the outbound traffic from Surabaya is expected to take place from H-10 to H+2, or March 21 to April 1, 2025, with the peak traffic anticipated on March 31, 2025,” stated Vice President of Corporate Secretary and Legal at PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol (JTT), Ria Marlinda Paallo, on March 20, as reported by kumparan.com.

According to Ria, homecoming traffic in East Java is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of road users, with increased activity on several key toll roads, including Warugunung and Kejapanan.

“The Warugunung Toll Gate on the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road is projected to handle 295,000 vehicles during the 2025 Eid homecoming period, a significant increase compared to normal conditions and last year’s Eid. Meanwhile, the Kejapanan Utama and Kejapanan I toll gates are estimated to see 333,000 vehicles passing through between March 21 and April 1,” she explained.

Ria emphasized that her team is implementing various strategies to manage congestion during the 2025 Eid homecoming period, including deploying additional backup personnel on the ground and collaborating with the police to ease traffic flow.

“In East Java, we have taken several measures to anticipate congestion in each area, including adding standby tow trucks and backup personnel for emergency services, ensuring that all situations are handled quickly,” she added.

The return traffic period to Surabaya is expected to take place from March 31 to April 11, 2025, with the peak return traffic projected on April 6.

National Police Chief: ‘Ketupat Operation’ Launched

National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has announced that the Ketupat Operation will deploy 164,298 personnel from various stakeholders, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Ministry of Transportation, and the Indonesian Scout Movement (Pramuka).

Additionally, the National Police will establish 2,335 security posts, consisting of 1,738 security posts, 788 service posts, and 309 integrated posts. Around 126,000 security personnel will be deployed to ensure safety across key locations, such as mosques, shopping centers, , terminals, stations, ports, airports, and tourist destinations.

Furthermore, the police have set up 110 hotline services for public complaints related to homecoming travel. Officers will be available 24/7 to handle inquiries and resolve travel-related issues promptly.

With these comprehensive preparations, the government and law enforcement agencies are committed to ensuring a safer, smoother, and more comfortable Eid homecoming experience in 2025.
