New Requirements for Indonesia’s VoA Extensions: What You Need to Know

Indonesia has introduced a new regulation that requires foreign nationals to undergo verification at a local immigration office to extend their Visa on Arrival (VoA). This recent change, outlined in Regulation No. 11 of 2024 by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, is aimed at streamlining the VoA extension process and ensuring compliance.

Extending Your VoA Online: What to Know

Despite the new verification requirement, visitors can still extend their Visa on Arrival online through evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The online process applies to both electronic VoAs (e-VoA) and sticker-based VoAs obtained at airport immigration counters. Immigration officers will first verify the applicant’s data before granting an extension, ensuring security and accuracy in processing.

Felucia Sengky Ratna, Director of Immigration Traffic, confirmed, “For both e-VoA holders and those with a sticker-based VoA obtained at the airport immigration counters, the extension process can be done online. After the request enters the system, immigration officers will first check the foreigner’s data before the VoA extension is granted.” Said Sengky, as reported by Jakarta Globe.

Step-by-Step Guide to Extending a VoA Online

To help travelers navigate this process, here are the necessary steps for extending a VoA online:

  1. Go to evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
  2. Click the “Extend My Visa” button on the main page.
  3. Input your passport number, nationality, and date of birth.
  4. Complete all required fields on the visa extension form.
  5. Provide a valid payment method and finalize the payment.

Once the extension is approved, your updated e-VoA, along with a QR code, will be sent to your email. Be sure to download and print this document before your trip, as immigration officers will scan the QR code upon arrival and attach an e-VoA sticker to your passport.

Documents Required for VoA Extension

Before applying online, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  • A valid passport
  • A digital image of your passport in JPG/JPEG/PNG format
  • A functional email address
  • A debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard)

These documents will streamline the extension process and help avoid delays.

Sponsor Requirement for Stays Exceeding 60 Days

Visitors planning to stay up to 60 days should note that a local Indonesian sponsor is now required for visa extensions beyond the standard period.

According to Sengky, as reported by Antara, “Foreign nationals need to assess their needs first. If they plan to stay in Indonesia for more than 60 days, it’s advisable to have a sponsor from the beginning. However, if they intend to stay for less than 60 days, they can apply for a visit visa without a sponsor.”

To simplify the process, those intending longer stays should arrange a sponsor early on to ensure a seamless application process.

Avoid Overstay Penalties by Applying Early

To prevent overstay fines, make sure to submit your visa extension application before the current visa expires. Article 98 of the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation Number 22 of 2023 outlines that visitors who complete the application and payment before their original VoA period ends will avoid penalties. This update encourages timely applications and helps travelers avoid unexpected fees.

Applying for VoA Extensions at Airport Counters

For foreign nationals who obtained their VoA at airport immigration counters, extending the visa online is straightforward. Simply go to the “Services” menu in the upper-right corner of the e-visa website, select “Find Existing Stay Permit,” and fill out the form with your personal details to proceed with the VoA extension.

Stay Compliant and Enjoy Your Time in Indonesia

The new VoA extension process emphasizes the importance of planning and local compliance. By following these guidelines, visitors can ensure a hassle-free extension and enjoy their stay in Indonesia without legal concerns.
