Major Worker Protest Hits Jakarta June 3: Routes to Avoid

Jakarta is bracing for major traffic disruptions on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, as approximately 3,000 workers and retirees are set to hold mass demonstrations in the city center. Organized by the Labour Party and the Coalition of Labor Unions (KSP-PB), the protest will include PT Pos Indonesia retirees and partner workers demanding justice over what they call “unfair treatment” by the company and government policies.

Roads and Locations to Avoid During Jakarta Labor Protest

The labor protest will begin at 9:30 AM and is expected to last until 5:00 PM, affecting several key roads in Central Jakarta:

  • 09:30 – 10:00 AM: Gathering at the front of the Ministry of SOEs (BUMN)
  • 10:00 AM – 01:00 PM: Demonstration at the State Palace on Jl. Veteran No. 17
  • 02:00 – 05:00 PM: Rally continues at the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Jl. Gatot Subroto No.1, Senayan

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid Jl. Veteran, Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara, and Jl. Gatot Subroto, as heavy traffic and road closures are anticipated during the protest hours.

Key Demands of the June 3 Jakarta Labor Demonstration

The demonstration will focus on four main demands that reflect deep dissatisfaction among workers and retirees with ongoing labor practices and public policy shifts.

  1. Cancel the Elimination of Retiree Allowances

Thousands of PT Pos retirees are urging the government and the company to reinstate vital allowances, including the Food Allowance (TP), Income Adjustment Allowance (TPP), BPJS Health Contribution Subsidy, and Bereavement Benefits.

“These allowances are not gifts, but rights earned through decades of hard work and dedication. Eliminating them is a betrayal of the contributions of retirees,” said Labour Party President Said Iqbal, as quoted by cnbcIndonesia.com.

  1. Abolish the Partnership System at PT Pos Indonesia

Workers denounce PT Pos Indonesia’s “kemitraan” or partnership model, claiming it enables the company to avoid full labor obligations. Protesters demand that all partner workers be converted into permanent employees with full benefits.

“This partnership system is just modern-day slavery. We demand that partner workers be given permanent status with full normative rights,” Iqbal emphasized.

  1. Stop Outsourcing Practices

The labor coalition is also pushing for an immediate end to outsourcing, a practice they argue results in job insecurity and low wages. This demand is tied to the labor-friendly promise made by Indonesia’s President-elect.

“Our call to eliminate outsourcing is aligned with the commitment made by President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who during the May Day speech on May 1 pledged to end harmful outsourcing practices,” Iqbal stated, according to tirto.id.

  1. Reject the KRIS BPJS Health System

Workers also oppose the new Standard Inpatient Class (KRIS) policy under BPJS Kesehatan, citing concerns over longer wait times, fewer available rooms, and rising premiums.

“Inpatient services are deteriorating, and the KRIS system risks becoming a crisis in public health access,” Iqbal warned.

Jakarta residents and commuters are urged to plan alternate routes and avoid central government buildings on June 3, 2025. The labor protest is expected to attract significant turnout and media coverage, amplifying calls for better protections for retirees and fair treatment of workers across Indonesia.
