Jazz Gunung 2025: Mountain Jazz Returns to Bromo and Ijen

Jazz Gunung, Indonesia’s high-altitude jazz festival, returns for its 17th edition in 2025. This year, the organizers announced two weekends at Mount Bromo and one event at Ijen in East Java. They will host the first two concerts at the open-air Amphitheater at Jiwa Jawa Resort Bromo. Specifically, they scheduled the Bromo concerts for Saturday, July 19, and Saturday, July 26, 2025. Then, they planned the third series for August 9, 2025, at Jiwa Jawa Resort Ijen in Banyuwangi. They chose the Taman Gandrung Terakota amphitheater as the venue for the Ijen concert. The festival’s slogan, “Beauty of Jazz, Melody of the Mountain,” continues to define its unique spirit. It emphasizes the harmony between jazz music and the surrounding highland landscapes.

About Jazz Gunung

Jazz gunung was founded in 2009 by a trio of Indonesian cultural figures: Sigit Pramono, Nitet Kartaredjasa, and the late musician Djaduk Ferianto, as an outdoor “ethnic jazz” concert series. The idea was to bring jazz and local musical traditions against the backdrop of Indonesia’s mountains. Since its inception, the festival has built a reputation for being unlike any other music event. The festival carries the spirit of “The Beauty of Jazz, the Melody of the Mountain.” It offers a harmonious blend of jazz, pop, and traditional sounds amid lush highland landscapes.

Over nearly two decades, Jazz Gunung has attracted both top Indonesian jazz talents and international guests. It has helped raise the profile of Java’s highland resorts (like Bromo and Ijen) as cultural destinations. As jazz impresario Dewa Budjana notes, the festival consciously balances veteran artist with rising stars each year. Broadly, Jazz Gunung is seen as a showcase of Indonesia’s keragaman budaya, uniting diverse ethnic music traditions under the universal language of jazz.

For 2025, Jazz Gunung’s move into its 17th year reaffirms its role in Indonesia’s cultural calendar. Together, the two July dates at Bromo and the Ijen edition in August give fans another chance to experience “jazz amidst the mountains.” Beyond the music on stage, this festival is also about community, nature, and national identity.
