The Indonesian government has intensified its monitoring of digital platforms amid growing concerns about violent and inappropriate content targeting children. Popular online game Roblox has come under particular scrutiny following warnings from education authorities about its potential negative impact on young users.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Angga Raka Prabowo emphasized that the government’s oversight extends beyond a single platform.
“We want to protect our children from harmful and negative influences in the digital world,” Angga said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (August 5), as reported by Radar Sulbar.
He explained that the ministry already operates several oversight mechanisms, including the Directorate General of Digital Space Monitoring and Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Management for Child Protection, widely known as PP Tunas. This regulation aims to ensure that children remain safe users of the digital environment.
“Protecting children in the digital space is a shared responsibility between the government, parents, and the media,” Angga stated, stressing the importance of age classification for games and consistent monitoring of their implementation.
He also underscored the role of families in educating children about digital ethics and boundaries:
“Education is essential, and so is parental supervision. Children must learn to use technology responsibly while understanding its limits. Positive values must be instilled early to guide our future generations,” he added.
Possible Roblox Ban
The government has signaled that a ban on Roblox remains possible if investigations confirm the game fosters aggressive or harmful behavior in children. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi clarified that the issue is not limited to Roblox alone but applies to all digital content.
“It’s not about Roblox specifically — we are trying to protect ourselves, our nation, and especially our younger generations from violent influences. If it contains elements of violence, we will shut it down. No problem,” Prasetyo told reporters at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday (August 5) as quoted by Media Indonesia.
Prasetyo noted that the rise in child-on-parent violence and group clashes serves as a warning about the broader moral and social challenges posed by digital media. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is conducting daily evaluations of games, social media platforms, and television content to detect violent or destructive material.
He concluded, “We must reduce anything that encourages negative behavior, especially among young generations. Protecting them is a moral and social obligation we all share.”
Previously, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti warned about the dangers of playing Roblox and urged students not to play the game, citing its numerous violent scenes.
