In a bold move to elevate Jakarta’s status as a global city, Governor Pramono Anung announced extended operating hours for public libraries and museums across the capital. This initiative aims to enhance educational literacy and increase access to knowledge resources for all residents.
“Jakarta must prepare to become a global city, one with improved educational literacy and a more knowledgeable society,” Pramono stated on Sunday (May 10, 2025), as quoted by tvonenews.com.
He emphasized that the government is committed to providing more opportunities for learning and self-development, particularly by keeping libraries open until 10:00 p.m. local time.
“The public’s reading interest is extraordinary. That’s why I instructed the Head of the Department to create more spaces for self-actualization,” he said.
The decision, he explained, is also in response to the growing interest in reading among the city’s residents. Following the extended hours, library visits have surged significantly.
“Currently, both the main library and HB Jassin Library have seen increased visitors because we are open until 10 p.m.,” Pramono added.
According to him, daily visitors now reach over 3,000, and the number rises to between 3,200 and 3,600 on weekends. He also noted that library users are generally satisfied with the book collections.
“When I asked visitors about complaints, most said the literacy collection was already quite complete,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that access to drinking water remains a concern. “I’ve requested the Head of Department to provide that supply,” Pramono confirmed.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is also extending museum operating hours as part of its wider educational reform. He highlighted the importance of this policy in increasing educational opportunities.
“Museums will no longer close at 5 p.m. Libraries will also stay open until around 10 or 11 p.m. This is part of our effort to provide access and education, especially for children who need time and space in the library,” Pramono told reporters at City Hall on Friday (May 2), as reported by cnnindonesia.com.
In conjunction with National Education Day 2025, the government also continued its second phase of diploma clearance, benefiting 371 students whose diplomas had previously been withheld due to financial hardship.
“In the first phase, we cleared 117 students. In this second phase, 371 diplomas have been cleared. This year, 6,652 students are already registered for clearance,” he added, expressing hope that the initiative will positively impact students’ futures.
