6 Indonesian Cities with Best Culinary by Taste Atlas

One of Indonesia’s most appealing and unique features is its diverse and distinctive culinary heritage, celebrated worldwide for its flavors.

Taste Atlas, a renowned travel and food website, has once again published its list of the world’s best and most delicious cuisines for 2024/2025. This announcement, made on Sunday (December 15, 2024).

The list is curated from 17,073 cities worldwide and ranked based on their culinary offerings. Out of these, 100 cities with the highest and most notable food ratings were highlighted. In the “100 Best Food Cities in the World 2024/2025” release, Indonesia proudly placed six cities on the list.

Here are the six Indonesian cities and their recommended dishes that should be on your must-try list:

  1. Jakarta

Ranked 16th globally, Jakarta leads as Indonesia’s top culinary city with an overall score of 4.69, tying with Kyoto, Japan.

Taste Atlas highlights several iconic dishes from Jakarta, such as:

  • Nasi Uduk (4.4)
  • Gado-Gado (4.1)
  • Bubur Ayam (4.4)
  • Soto Betawi (4.6)
  • Bakso (4.1)
  • Kue Ape (4.2)
  • Kerak Telor (3.6)

Famous restaurants in Jakarta include Restoran 1945, Lapo Marpadotbe, Bandar Djakarta, and Asinan Betawi H.

  1. Bandung

Bandung, ranked 32nd with a score of 4.54, is celebrated for its flavorful and popular dishes, such as:

  • Batagor (4.6)
  • Cireng (3.9)
  • Nasi Kuning (4.4)
  • Mie Kocok (3.7)
  • Serabi (4.2)

Iconic eateries in Bandung include Warung Nasi Ibu Imas, Lemper Purnama, Baso Tahu Mang Ade, Serabi Kinca Suji – Eka Rasa, and Batagor Yunus.

Padang ranks 58th with a score of 4.44, matching Zagreb, Croatia. Renowned globally for its Minangkabau cuisine, Padang’s dishes often feature in world’s best food lists. Key highlights include:

  • Nasi Padang (4.7)
  • Gulai (4.5)
  • Sate Padang (4.5)

Top-rated restaurants in Padang are Lamun Ombak Rumah Makan, Kripik Balado Christine Hakim, Pagi Sore, Resto Selamat, and Restoran Simpang Raya.

  1. Solo/Surakarta

Solo, also known as Surakarta, ranks 82nd globally with a score of 4.37, sharing its spot with Seoul, South Korea.

For your information, the city that tops the Taste Atlas rankings with a perfect score is Naples, Italy. It is followed by three other Italian cities: Milan, Bologna, and Florence, all celebrated for their exceptional culinary heritage.

Andrzej is Co-owner/ Founder and Director of Seven Stones Indonesia. He was born in the UK to Polish parents and has been living in Indonesia for more than 33-years. Terje is from Norway and has been living in Indonesia for over 20-years. Ridwan Jasin Zachrie

Ridwan is one of Indonesia’s top executives with a long and illustrious career in the financial world. He holds several professional certifications including being a Certified Business Valuer (CBV) issued by the Australian Academy of Finance and Management; Broker-Dealer Representative (WPPE); and The Directorship Certification for Directors and Commissioners, issued by the Indonesian Institute of Commissioners and Directors.

His experience includes being the Managing Director at one of the top investment banking groups in the region, the Recapital Group, the CFO at State-owned enterprises in fishery industry and the CEO at Tanri Abeng & Son Holding. He’s also been an Independent Commissioner in several Financial Service companies and on the Audit and Risk Committee at Bank BTPN Tbk, Berau Coal Energy Tbk, Aetra Air Jakarta as well as working for Citibank, Bank Mandiri and HSBC. His last position was as CFO at PT Citra Putra Mandiri – OSO Group.

Per is the Managing Director of the Seven Stones Indonesia (SSI) Jakarta office and has more than 25-years’ experience in Indonesia, China, and Western Europe. He previously worked in senior management positions with Q-Free ASA, Siemens AG, and other companies in the telecom sector. Over the last six years, he has been the Chairman of the Indonesia-Norway Business Council (INBC) and recently become elected to be on the board of EuroCham Indonesia.

His most recent experience is within Intelligent Transport Solutions (ITS), Telecom, and other sectors within the Indonesian market. He is today through his position in SSI and by representing Norway Connect, promoting Nordic and European companies that would like to explore business opportunities in the Indonesian market. He’s also playing an active role to help create the Nordic House concept in Jakarta that will provide an excellent platform for Nordic companies entering Indonesia, where they’ll find a community that can offer support with trusted information and affordable services to enter this market.
