Govt. Pushing To Start EV Battery Production In 2024

The website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia has posted that the government continues to encourage the development of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem through the production of the first electric vehicle battery in Indonesia which is targeted to start in 2024.

This was conveyed by the Minister of Investment/ Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia in his statement after a limited meeting chaired by President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday, January 13, 2023.

“We have made several formulations that the development of the car battery ecosystem will continue. And it is planned that in 2024 our production will start in the first half of 2024 which will be built by LG in Karawang,” said Bahlil.

Furthermore, Bahlil said that the construction of the electric vehicle battery ecosystem from upstream to downstream between LG Electronics and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) will start this year. Bahlil also conveyed that the government will place restrictions on the construction of smelters that are not green energy oriented.

“In the future, we will place restrictions on the construction of smelters that are not green energy oriented. This is a form of government concern in order to organize the development of products oriented towards green energy and green industry,” said Bahlil.

Bahlil said that the government is currently regulating sweetener formulations to build a competitive electric vehicle industry. In addition, Bahlil stressed that building an electric vehicle ecosystem could create new jobs.

“With regard to cars, with motorbikes, we are still arranging the formulation regarding sweetener, what model is the most appropriate and competitive for us to build. So in the future what we will build is an EV development ecosystem and motorbikes are the realm of job creation,” he said.

Furthermore, Bahlil considers that Indonesia has a large share of the electric vehicle market. Therefore, Bahlil emphasized that this great opportunity must be maintained.

“Indonesia cannot lose, we have a big market. Don’t let our market be penetrated by products from abroad, we have to be on guard. The second is, we are also able to penetrate the export market,” he said.
