Tempo are reporting on a statement from President Jokowi that the number of foreign tourists entering Indonesia in 2022 will double when compared to 2021. The surge, he said, has also happened in other countries as a sign of the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This indicates that human connectivity has shown a resurgence,” he said at the World Tourism Day (WTD) event broadcast on the World Tourism Organization’s YouTube channel on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
According to Tempo, Jokowi went on to explain that although the world has started to recover, the tourism sector is still facing many global challenges. Besides, there are other challenges such as sharp inflation in various countries, rising fuel prices that lead to high transportation costs, ongoing geopolitical conflicts, and climate change that are increasingly affecting all aspects of people’s lives.
“All these challenges must be faced with creativity, innovation, and global cooperation. The tourism sector must be oriented towards inclusive and sustainable global economic growth, as well as environmentally friendly and sustainable,” the President emphasized.
Jokowi further underlined that the tourism sector must also preserve local cultures and involve local communities. Thus, Indonesia could reach its goal of the G20 presidency: Recover Together, Recover Stronger.
